DREAM OR REALITY

by Roquislaine Barbosa

I was born in Goiania, a big city in Brazil, twenty-four years ago. When I was just three years old, I started studying. When I was seventeen, I went to law school and I spent five years of my life there.

My parents have a hardware shop in my hometown. I have a sister who is a year older than I and she has the same career as me. She has a law office and specializes in worker injury.

I’ve been in the United States since December, 2000. The proposal of my life in this country is to continue my career in the United States of America; that is, to go on with my education and to work as a lawyer.

Even before I came here, I’d known that it would be a very difficult task because I would have to start my life from the beginning. I had to learn another language completely different from mine. I had to find a place to live. I had to find a job. At this time, my job is newspaper delivery, but I used to have another one, which I quit to start studying English. I made this decision because it’s a very difficult situation when you want to live in a country different from your own and you don’t speak its language.

Life is very difficult when you have drastic changes. In my hometown I used to have everything within my reach, but here I have to work on my own to get whatever I want. Life is like this, and dreams are dreamed to keep people alive and fighting for something they believe will be special and rewarding.

The only thing you have to do is to try reaching for your goals and never give up trying. If you try and fail, at least you have tried. But if you never try, you’ll never know what it is that is waiting for you.
